Diversity and Cultural Competency (1 module)

All of us are biased in some way, but we can become aware of our prejudices and work hard to overcome them. This course will look at the ways we are all hurt by oppressions and help us understand our responsibility to work against them. Cultural competence can never be fully achieved, but this module is intended to start you on the journey.

Audience

This course is intended for domestic violence advocates.

Objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify reasons for reaching out to and working with diverse individuals;
  • Define oppression, stereotype, prejudice, discrimination, and privilege;
  • List at least six “isms” that exist in today’s society;
  • Examine activities for aspiring allies; and
  • Differentiate between activities and procedures that are culturally competent and those that are not.

Credits

Participants are awarded 1.5 credit hours by NNADV for successful completion of this module.

NNADV Program Standards

Credits for this module can be used to fulfill a portion of the 20-hour training identified in the NNADV Program Standards. This course fulfills 1.5 hours of the 20 hours recommended under the NNADV Program Standards.

Because there is a strong likelihood that many of us have experienced some form of trauma, some of the information in the Advocate Certificate courses may be difficult to read or even trigger unexpected emotional responses. If this happens to you, pay attention to your responses to the material and take care of yourself. You may want to stop and regroup before coming back to the courses. You can also talk to your supervisor for support or to discuss your needs before returning.
